Grabber
Overview
This is the home page of the Picture Grabber, a customised web browser
based around Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and incorporating the ability
to select from a list of images on a web site and save them to disk automatically.
Details
The web is a plentiful source of images of all kinds, but when you come
to download them, you usually find that you have to fetch them one at
a time. In Internet Explorer, for example, you might have to:
- click on a link to an image
- wait for it to load
- right click on the image
- select ‘Save picture as…’
- choose a file name and folder
- click OK
- click the ‘Back’ button
- repeat for the next image
Boring. The Picture Grabber is intended to make life a little easier
by letting you select the images you want from a list, then have the
program download them in one go while you go off and make a cup of coffee.
System requirements
To use the Picture Grabber you will need:
- a PC running Windows 95/98 or higher, Windows NT 4, or Windows 2000
- Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or later installed on your
machine (see below*)
* Microsoft's distribution license for the components of Internet Explorer
(IE) mean that developers cannot include the individual components separately
in their applications. Picture Grabber uses the core browser engine from
IE4/5, and this must be installed on your machine before installing
Picture Grabber. You are not required to use IE as your default browser,
or indeed at all, but installed it must be.
You can obtain IE5.5 from many magazine cover CDs or by downloading
it from Microsoft.
Downloading
Picture Grabber is supplied in zipped format so you will need a zip
decompressing program such as WinZip to expand it after downloading.
Once you have successfully unzipped the archive, see the file readme.txt
for information on installing. The current version is 1.0.18, dated August
22nd 2001.
Important note: the current version of Picture Grabber was compiled
under Windows 2000, but on some machines an installation problem may
occur under that version of Windows. To avoid this, it is strongly
recommended that Windows 2000 users download and install the specific
Windows 2000 version. This problem will be resolved in a future version
of Picture Grabber. The two versions are functionally identical.

If you are running Windows 95, 98, or Me and the current version 1.0.18
causes problems for you, then try the previous version (1.0.15) which
you can also download from this site.
You will also need the patch program to
version to 1.0.17. Always try the current version first before reverting
